The book begins with an execution for the attempted assassination of the president of France. In his mids, he had been posted as a journalist to Paris. This page was last edited on 25 Octoberat Not only does the reasonably well-informed reader know that, historically, de Gaulle was not assassinated, but Forsyth actually makes a point of telling us this early in the book.

SpyThrillerHistorical novel. All three are great action stories jackak still appeal. Forsyth’s later novels are competent, but they lack the Cinema Verite no I don’t care if I’m using that term loosely of his first three novels which was the very thing that I liked.

If one is curious as to how the story could be amped up see the movie version “The Jackal” with Bruce Willis and Sidney Frfderick. The Jackal enters France through Italy, driving a rented Alfa Romeo sports car with his weapon welded to the chassis.

All of this knowledge was poured in. Once i got into the thrilling part of the novel, i federick couldnt stop reading. He seduces a vulnerable Baroness. And I guess, it could even pass as historical fiction now since Forsyth gives a great overview of the political tension between France and Algeria in the s and the presidency of Charles de Gaulle.
And finally, beneath all its action, drama and chases, it actually boils down to which of them is more disciplined about his work. It kept me in suspense and excitement because I did not know the Jackal’s next move or how clever he could be to alter his plans when necessary.

Using these real facts from history Forsyth creates a fictional assassination plot against Charles de Gaulle, where the OAS frustrated with their repeated attempts of failure, hires a British contract killer – only known as ‘The Jackal’ – to kill De Gaulle. They have discovered the plot by the OAS after some rather unsavory moments with a member of their inner circle. I first read The Day of the Jackal while on holiday in Spain, and so will always associate it with the scorching blue skies over the Platja de Torrenostra.
